Winter Hoverboard Care: How to Ride Safely and Protect Your Board in Wet Weather

Can you ride a hoverboard in the rain?
Our recommendation is simple: avoid riding your hoverboard in the rain or on wet and damp surfaces.
Hoverboards contain electrical and electronic components that are not designed to be exposed to unrestricted water contact. Moisture can enter through openings around the wheels, casing, footpads or other parts of the device. Depending on where water reaches, it may affect electrical connections, sensors, motors or the battery system.
Even a light shower can leave surfaces slippery and create conditions that are unsuitable for riding. Wet ground can reduce tyre grip, make it harder to maintain balance and increase the likelihood of a fall.
For these reasons, we recommend waiting until the weather improves and the riding surface has dried before using your hoverboard.
An important part of hoverboard winter care is recognising that a device should only be used in conditions suitable for its design. Avoiding unnecessary exposure to moisture is one of the simplest ways to protect your hoverboard.
Why damp grass can be a problem
Grass can look like a soft and forgiving surface, but it is not always suitable for hoverboard riding. During autumn and winter, grass often remains damp for long periods, particularly after rainfall or overnight dew.
Wet grass can cling to the tyres and be thrown upwards as the wheels rotate. Mud, moisture, small stones, leaves and other debris can also collect around the wheel arches.
If particles and residue are repeatedly thrown into the wheel arches, they may accumulate around moving parts and potentially find their way into areas where they do not belong.
If you choose to ride on grass, we recommend that it is:
- Completely dry: Avoid grass that is wet from rain, dew or frost.
- Short and well maintained: Long grass can catch around the wheels and throw debris into the wheel arches.
- Firm and even: Avoid muddy, soft or uneven patches that could affect balance and control.
- Free from hidden obstacles: Check for stones, branches, holes and other hazards before riding.
Good hoverboard winter care starts with choosing the right riding surface. Even grass that looks reasonably dry can retain moisture beneath the surface, particularly after overnight dew or rainfall.
Remember that an off-road tyre does not make a hoverboard suitable for every terrain or weather condition. Even a more robust model needs to be used sensibly.
Are hoverboards waterproof?
No. You should never assume that a hoverboard is waterproof.
We have seen water-resistance and waterproof claims used rather loosely in the hoverboard market. These terms are not interchangeable. A product described as water-resistant may offer a certain level of protection under specified test conditions, but that does not mean it can be submerged, ridden through puddles or used freely in heavy rain.
Be cautious when you see claims that a hoverboard is completely waterproof. Ask the seller for the actual IP rating, what that rating means and which parts of the device it applies to. A vague marketing statement is not a substitute for a clearly specified protection rating.
Good hoverboard winter care also means understanding the limitations of your device. Water resistance should never be confused with waterproof protection, and even models with an IP rating need to be treated responsibly.
What does IP54 water resistance mean?
IP ratings are used to describe the degree of protection an enclosure provides against the ingress of solid objects and water. The two digits have separate meanings.
- The first digit, 5: Indicates dust-protected construction. It does not mean that dust cannot enter under any circumstances.
- The second digit, 4: Indicates protection against water splashes from any direction under the specified test conditions.
This is why an IP54 rating should not be interpreted as permission to ride through puddles, in heavy rain or across flooded ground. It describes a defined level of protection, not complete waterproofing.
For more information about ingress protection ratings, see the International Electrotechnical Commission’s explanation of IP ratings.
The HUMMER 8.5-inch: Our IP54 water-resistant hoverboard
Within our range, the HUMMER 8.5-inch hoverboard is the model specified with IP54 water resistance. It offers an additional level of protection compared with models that do not carry this rating.
However, we want to be absolutely clear: IP54 does not make the HUMMER waterproof. It is still important to avoid unnecessary exposure to water, wet ground and puddles. We recommend treating the rating as an additional protective feature rather than an invitation to ride in poor weather.
When considering hoverboard winter care, the HUMMER 8.5-inch offers an additional feature through its IP54 water-resistance specification. However, this does not remove the need to avoid wet riding conditions.
The HUMMER’s larger 8.5-inch off-road tyres also make it a popular choice for riders looking for a more substantial all-terrain style of hoverboard. As with any model, the surface should be suitable, the rider should remain in control and the manufacturer’s instructions should always be followed.

How to look after your hoverboard after a winter ride
Even when you have ridden in suitable conditions, it is worth giving your hoverboard a quick inspection after each session. This is particularly important during autumn and winter, when leaves, grit and other debris can collect on the ground.
Follow these simple steps as part of your regular hoverboard maintenance routine:
- Inspect the wheels: Check for leaves, grass, stones or other debris caught around the tyres and wheel arches.
- Check the casing: Look for cracks, damage or signs that moisture may have entered the device.
- Clean carefully: Use a soft, dry cloth to remove dirt from the exterior. Do not spray the board with water or use a pressure washer.
- Allow it to dry naturally: If the exterior is damp, leave the board switched off in a dry, well-ventilated place.
- Do not charge a wet or damaged board: If you suspect water has entered the device, stop using it and seek advice before charging or operating it again.
Never attempt to dry a hoverboard using direct heat, a radiator, a hairdryer or another heat source. Excessive heat can damage electrical components and the battery.

Winter storage and battery care
If you are not planning to use your hoverboard as frequently during winter, storing it correctly can help keep it in good condition.
Keep the device indoors in a cool, dry location, away from damp areas, direct sunlight and sources of excessive heat. Avoid leaving it in a garden shed, garage or vehicle if temperatures and moisture levels are unsuitable.
Always follow the charging and storage instructions supplied with your particular model. Use only the original charger or an approved replacement, inspect the battery and charger for damage, and never charge a device that is wet or showing signs of a fault.
Proper hoverboard winter care does not stop when your ride finishes. Correct cleaning, drying and indoor storage are equally important when your device is not being used regularly.

Shorter days, brighter rides: Enjoy the Disco hoverboard range
Winter does not mean the fun has to stop. In fact, the longer evenings can make the lighting features on certain hoverboards look even more impressive.
Our Disco hoverboard range is designed to stand out, with colourful RGB lighting around the wheels, alongside the usual LED lighting and built-in Bluetooth speakers. The changing colours create a lively visual effect, especially in darker surroundings.
Put on your favourite music through the built-in speakers and enjoy the entertainment of a Disco hoverboard during suitable riding sessions. It is a fun combination of movement, colour and sound that makes these models particularly eye-catching.
Of course, darker conditions also mean reduced visibility. Always ride only where permitted, on private land with the owner’s permission, and make sure the area is properly lit, clear of obstacles and suitable for the rider. Never assume that decorative LEDs make a hoverboard road-legal or suitable for use in public spaces.
Take a look at our hoverboard collection to explore the different styles and features available.

Remember: Hoverboards are for suitable private riding areas
It is also important to remember that privately owned hoverboards are not generally legal to use on UK public roads, pavements or other prohibited public spaces. The Department for Transport’s powered transporter guidance explains where these devices may be used.
Use your hoverboard only on private land with the landowner’s permission, and always check the relevant rules for the location where you intend to ride. You can read the official GOV.UK powered transporters guidance.
Enjoy winter riding, but look after your hoverboard
Hoverboards are great fun, but they are not designed to be treated like waterproof outdoor equipment. Wet roads, damp grass, puddles and muddy ground can all create unnecessary risks for both the rider and the device.
Choose dry riding conditions, keep your wheels and casing clean, store your board correctly and follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions. If you own a HUMMER 8.5-inch model, remember that its IP54 rating provides additional water resistance, not waterproof protection.
Following these hoverboard winter care recommendations will help you protect your device, maintain good riding habits and enjoy your hoverboard for longer.
