The Science of Hoverboards

Ever walked past your neighbour majestically swirling on a Hoverboard in their garden and wondered the science of Hoverboards?

Not to state the obvious, but Hoverboards don’t actually hover; they’re more self-balancing boarders or scooters. However, these impressive, nippy machines contain highly advanced technology. At HOVERBOARD-PRO, we wanted to give you some insight into the science of Hoverboards and the amazing technology within. Read along, you won’t be disappointed!

Before we get all techy, It’s best you begin with a brief baseline of what happens when you step on a Hoverboard and how they actually move. Once the Hoverboard is charged and switched on, it will balance independently. Firstly, you begin by stepping on it with one foot, then the other. As long as you keep your body weight central and not lean in any direction, you will balance on the spot. Simple right? It will take some practice though!

To propel the Hoverboard forward, you press down the front of your feet. Conversely, pressing down with your heels will enable the Hoverboard to roll backwards. As the two foot pads are only attached and can manoeuvre independently of each other, placing more pressure on one side will make the Hoverboard spin in either direction! Simply put, Hoverboards work by moving and turning by responding to very subtle cues of body movement and sensitive pressure wherever you apply it. Whether they hover or not, you definitely will feel like you’re hovering!

Science of Hoverboards: Internal Components

Getting into the more technical aspects of how a hoverboard works, we must assess the parts that internal components harmoniously work together to enable you to perform those amazing tricks! All in all, It’s the science of Hoverboards that makes them work.

Our Hoverboards contain the following:

  • 21 Cell Lithium-ion Samsung Battery
  • Two gyroscopes (one for each wheel)
  • Motherboard / Logic board
  • Two 350W Motors (one in each wheel)

Let us explain what these things are!

  • The Battery

This part is quite self-explanatory, this is the powerhouse of a Hoverboard! You wouldn’t be going anywhere without it. At HOVERBOARD-PRO, we use premium Samsung lithium-ion batteries as they’re lightweight, have a high energy density. Supplying you with more mileage with each charge, all within a compact package. They really determine how fast your Hoverboard will go and for how long! You’ve probably heard of Hoverboards bursting into flames, this is because dodgy vendors attempt to cut down costs by using cheap half batteries that will not sustain the time. This is why at HOVERBOARD-PRO, we only use the best batteries that are individually UL 2272 certified to ensure your safety.

  • Gyroscopes

This is where the self-balancing technology calls into play! Each side of the Hoverboard contains a gyroscope, whereby the wheel sends different speed and tilt information to the gyroscope next to it. Based on how your weight is distributed, the gyroscopes and tilt sensors jointly calculate your centre of gravity and maintain your balance. After this, the gyroscopes process the information and send it to the motherboard, which helps keep balanced while speeding or slowing down.

Normally, if the Hoverboard is glitching, it is most likely an issue with the gyroscopes being out of sync. This is when it is required to re-calibrate the Hoverboard again which will rest the current state of the gyroscopes back to zero again.

  • The REAL science of Hoverboards: Motherboard

This is the brain of the Hoverboard! The entire life of the board is controlled from here. Think of it as a miniature computer inside of your board where all the processing happens. The logic board controls the riding modes, the LED lights, power consumptions and much more! Any feedback from the gyroscope and speed control is driven here, where the logic board can analyse acceleration, deceleration and turning from side to side. As well as this, It understands the relationship between the right and left pedals, wheels and how the sensors break and connect the movements of your feed to keep you balanced.

  • Wheel Motors

They may only look like wheels but there’s a lot going on within!

Normally, Hoverboards have two motors; one in each wheel. This enables the two wheels to move and accelerate separately from one another at different speeds. This is what allows you to actually turn! Imagine a scenario where you would only be able to ride forward and backwards, boring huh?

Each individual wheel is appointed a sensor which reads the speed and tilt of the board at each moment during your ride.

Now that you’ve grasped the science of Hoverboards, how they work and what is propelling you around the block. Check out our range of bespoke built UK Hoverboards, that will certainly fulfil your adventurous appetite! We use only the safest, most reliable components certified for the UK consumer.
