Dodgy Hoverboard goes up in flames while charging next to son’s bed

In recent news, a mum warns parents to take care when buying Hoverboards as her dodgy Hoverboard went up in flames while charging next to her son’s bed.

As seen in the image above, the dodgy Hoverboard charger doesn’t have a UK BS1363 approved fused plug

In a recent news article from a Welsh newspaper, a report has been released of a family whos cheap Hoverboard had gone up in flames while it was charging. While the fire damaged the mothers 10-year old kids bedroom, it luckily didn’t spread to other parts of the house.

This story is reminiscent of the many times we have warned customers against purchasing cheap Swegways and dodgy Hoverboards online. Over the last 5 years, we insist on customers purchasing from reputable Hoverboard companies rather than from cheap disloyal sellers. Although it isn’t always easy to identify a good Hoverboard company, we have provided some important guidelines on how to do so. Please take some time to read the article here.

In the article, a mum warns parents to take care when buying dodgy Hoverboards after her sons went up in flames while charging next to his bed. The mother from Abergavenny, Wales, bought her 10-year-old son a two-wheeled self-balancing electronic scooter known as a Hoverboard or Swegway for Christmas last year.

Dodgy Hoverboards Online

The mother-of-four bought the dodgy Hoverboard online from a website she thought was reputable for allegedly around £200. At HOVERBOARD PRO we often warn customers against purchasing a cheap Hoverboard online. Furthermore, we ask customers to ensure that the websites they purchase from have a strong history of Swegway sales.

It’s a bit of a minefield online when it comes to purchasing decent Hoverboards for sale. However, it’s not impossible to find reputable Hoverboard companies such as HOVERBOARD PRO that guarantee safety and reliability.

Last week on Monday evening while her son was charging the dodgy Hoverboard device fully for the first time, the Hoverboard set alight and flames spread to his bed and flooring.

The mother from Wales fears that if her 12-year-old daughter Tirion hadn’t heard the device “making popping noises” from her own bedroom, the fire could have spread throughout her home and destroyed the entire house.

It sounds like the mother has learned the hard way! She is now warning other parents thinking about buying a Hoverboard to check that it is definitely from a reputable brand and has a British or European safety mark or carries CE [and UL] certifications.

Cheap Hoverboards are Dangerous

The mother recollects her child running downstairs after hearing popping noises coming from their dodgy Hoverboard, only to witness their bedroom up in smoke. Luckily, the tended to the fire immediately before any further damage was caused.

The mother of the child reportedly said: “We’re in the process of trying to find out what brand it was because I can’t remember where we got it from.”

This statement indicates that they must have purchased it from a non-reputable company that has probably by now vanished. This is not uncommon, unfortunately. Disloyal companies take advantage of ignorant consumers who are often attracted to the cheap prices on Hoverboards. Little do they know that cheap Hoverboards are dangerous.

When purchasing a Hoverboard, it is important to ensure the company ticks the following boxes:

  1. Has a UK contact number and ANSWERS THE PHONE
  2. Is VAT registered – it is not enough to simply be a registered business. It only takes an average of 40 sales a year for a Hoverboard company to reach the VAT threshold. If it isn’t VAT registered then they’re not ‘reputable’.
  3. They have a physical retail presence
  4. Their Hoverboards are fully compliant and certified under all British directives of safety
  5. Provide SAMSUNG or LG batteries
  6. Supply BS1363 approved fused UK plugs
  7. Has a history of sales and excellent reviews

For peace of mind, purchase a Hoverboard from the UK’s #1 Swegway supplier: HOVERBOARD PRO.
