Hoverboards are indeed legal. There is nothing ‘illegal’ about owning a Hoverboard. However, there are a few caveats which you must consider in order to stay within the legal boundaries of owning a Hoverboard in the UK.
Believe it or not, this is one of the Hoverboard UK Top Questions asked. Although chose to wait until Part 2 of this article to talk about it, we have written several times about this topic in the past.
Firstly, take a look at the following articles for your perusal:
Once you had a look at the above articles, you might already know the answer. However, for the purpose of clarity, let’s break it down for you…
Hoverboards are totally legal to own in the UK. However, since they are recognised as a ‘Motorised Vehicle’ there are technicalities which you must consider. Firstly, You must not ride a Hoverboard on a public footpath or road. Instead, you can enjoy riding a Hoverboard in the UK in the following places:
Whilst the government don’t seem too strict about it; it’s not worth the risk. We never recommend riding your Hoverboard on the road, even if it was to be legalised due to the dangers and risk of vehicles and other factors.
Can it be done? This question successfully makes it to our Hoverboard UK Top Questions Part 2 segment since it’s a popular one, too!
We understand why you might want to take your Hoverboard abroad. There are several reasons why this may be something you’re considering, some of which may be:
However, since 2015 it has been quite clear that most – if not all – airlines are prohibiting Hoverboards on the plane. The reason for this is quite simple: BATTERIES.
Hoverboards contain several Lithium-ion batteries combined into a single lithium-ion pack. These types of batteries at high quantities are prohibited from catching flight due to the combustion risks that they may impose on those onboard their flight.
Therefore, for the safety of all those on the flight, bringing your Hoverboard on the plane is likely not going to be allowed. However, if you can prove that you have taken the battery pack out of the Hoverboard device, then there is no reason why airlines will not allow them with you.
Some Hoverboards for sale which come directly from China may contain an App. This allows the rider to toggle between modes and to diagnose basic commands and faults with the device. However, these commands can also be done without the requirement for an App.
The apps (similar to remotes) require an additional PCB attachment to the gyroscopes and motherboard which have been known to cause reliability issues as well as battery faults. Furthermore, none of the Apps developed in China is yet compatible with proper English and is not yet verified by Google Play or Applestore as of yet
We focus on reliability and safety above all, and will only ever roll out a service or product if it passes our benchmark of reliability standards. This is why we discontinued key fobs back in 2016 and have not allowed App functionality within our Hoverboards for sale as of yet.
So far, HOVERBOARD-PRO Hoverboards for sale is the closest thing to an affordable Hoverboard. However, companies have begun developing true levitating Hoverboards and soon it may come into existence! Having said this, we cannot imagine it being affordable just yet, however.
In the above video, we see the Lexus levitating Hoverboard come to life. Whether this will be a prototype for a while or if it may be soon on the high street is still yet unknown.
